A new book claims that Prince Philip’s two-word nickname for Meghan Markle speaks volumes. The label, the book says, captures a lot about the late Duke of Edinburgh’s first impression of her. The book alleges that Prince Philip used the nickname in private conversations while Markle was dating his grandson, Prince Harry.

A new biography alleges that Prince Philip gave Meghan Markle a nickname when she was first welcomed into the Royal Family.
In 2017, shortly after beginning her romance with Prince Harry, Markle attended the Christmas Party at Windsor Castle. It was there that she first met his grandparents, the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, per Hello!.
Writer and royal historian Hugo Vickers has disclosed new insights about that night in his book Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History. “The staff at Sandringham joyfully surrounded the couple at the annual Christmas party and nicknamed the actress ‘Sparkle’. Prince Philip, however, was not taken in. He referred to her as ‘the American’,” Vickers stated.
“Nor were the Royal Family entirely happy, Prince Charles taking a Mountbatten line – have fun with her, but don’t marry her. The Queen suggested that Harry should wait a year, ” he added, detailing the family’s reaction.
Biographer Ingrid Seward claimed in My Mother and I that the late Duke nicknamed Meghan “DOW” after Wallis Simpson. In 1936, Edward VIII gave up the throne to marry the divorced American socialite. Prince Philip reportedly found the resemblance between Meghan and Wallis “uncanny.”
On May 19, 2018, Prince Philip accompanied Queen Elizabeth to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel. He had stepped back from royal duties in August 2017 at the age of 96, so his appearance was unusual.
In her 2022 Netflix series with Prince Harry, the As Ever founder made an uncommon reference to Prince Philip. Looking back on Christmas 2017, she said that she sat beside her husband’s grandfather at dinner. Meghan Markle further shared that she enjoyed chatting with him about various things.
