Belgium’s World Cup celebration just sent a message that went far beyond the soccer field. The team’s viral goal celebration appeared to target Donald Trump during their dominant Round of 16 victory.
Belgium players mock Donald Trump during goal celebration
Belgium eliminated the United States from the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Monday, according to the New York Post. The team secured a dominant 4-1 victory in the Round of 16 on American soil. Star striker Romelu Lukaku scored the fourth and final goal in stoppage time.
Lukaku and several teammates then celebrated by performing the iconic Donald Trump dance in a circle together. The celebration quickly went viral across social media platforms. Belgium’s roster appeared to direct the taunt at both the host nation and its president.
President Trump had become a central figure in the tournament’s storyline before Monday’s match. He intervened to help overturn USA striker Folarin Balogun’s red card from the Round of 32. Trump confirmed he had spoken with FIFA president Gianni Infantino about the suspension.
Trump addressed the situation on Monday and explained his involvement with the FIFA president. He stated, “I didn’t tell him what to do. I can’t tell him what to do.” He added that he believed a committee ultimately made the decision on the suspension.
Trump also defended the reversal by saying, “They made the right decision, because number one, it wasn’t a foul.” He further noted, “You want to see a game with your best players.” However, the Belgian side had expressed outrage over Trump’s intervention before the match.
Despite Balogun’s return to the lineup, the move did not change Monday’s outcome. He failed to make an impact against a dominant Belgian defense throughout the contest. Belgium controlled the match convincingly and ended America’s World Cup run emphatically on home soil.
