Marvel Studios may have big plans for the characters from a film that underperformed at the box office. According to a new rumor, Marvel is reportedly planning to bring back the Eternals.
The Eternals rumored to be a part of Marvel’s cosmic future
According to Alex Perez from The Cosmic Circus, Marvel Studios reportedly plans to bring back the Eternals. The scooper was asked about Marvel’s plans for the cosmic section of the MCU and which characters would be its pillar. Perez answered, “Nova for sure is one. Star Lord will be another. Shi’Ar and Eternals.”
The Eternals headlined their own film in 2021, introducing audiences to Sersi, Ikaris, Kingo, Sprite, Phastos, Makkari, Druig, Gilgamesh, and others. The film also featured Kit Harington as Dane Whitman, setting the stage for a Black Knight project featuring Blade that never saw the light of day. The film was directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao, but failed at the box office after receiving mixed reviews.
The ending of Eternals set the stage for another adventure, with the Celestial Arishem taking Phastos, Kingo, and Makkari away from Earth. A post-credits scene showed the rest of the group meeting Eros, Thanos’ brother, played by Harry Styles. As for a potential sequel, Zhao has expressed enthusiasm to direct it.
In the years since Eternals was released, there have been many rumors about the group’s return to the big screen. Some recent rumors have pointed to at least a few Eternals members returning in Avengers: Secret Wars. The scooper had previously claimed that Marvel still had plans to use Kit Harington’s Black Knight in the future.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe will continue with this summer’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day, followed by Avengers: Doomsday. The latter is expected to provide a payoff to many of the characters and stories introduced since 2019’s Avengers: Endgame.
