The DCU’s next Batman movie might already have its real director lined up. New rumors suggest Andy Muschietti may not end up helming Batman: The Brave and the Bold after all.
James Gunn rumored to direct DCU’s Batman movie himself?
James Gunn may replace Andy Muschietti as the director of DCU’s Batman movie, according to new rumors. Commentator Matt Jarbo shared the speculation on X, while World of Reel also reported on the possibility. Muschietti has been attached to direct the Batman and Robin team-up film since June 2023.
The rumor gains traction amid the underperformance of Supergirl at the box office. Jarbo argued that the film’s struggles highlight a growing concern among fans and observers. Many believe Gunn needs to write or closely oversee every major DCU script going forward.
Gunn personally wrote Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, Superman, and Man of Tomorrow. Those projects carried a consistent creative voice that Supergirl reportedly lacked. Jarbo suggested that Gunn may need to take direct control of The Brave and the Bold to maintain consistency.
Christina Hodson wrote the latest draft of the screenplay for the film. The movie will focus on Batman and his son Damian Wayne, based on Grant Morrison’s comic book run. Gunn announced the project in January 2023 as part of the DCU’s Chapter One slate.
Separately, Tom Brittney has emerged as the rumored choice to play Batman in the film. The English actor was previously a finalist for the role of Superman before losing it to David Corenswet. Gunn has not confirmed any casting for the project.
Gunn has previously acknowledged that Batman presents the biggest creative challenge in the DCU. He has spoken about the difficulty of developing a version distinct from Matt Reeves’ take on the character. He has also stressed that Batman must have a genuine narrative reason to exist within the shared universe.
No release date exists for The Brave and the Bold at this time. Reports suggest that Wonder Woman will enter production first, likely sometime in 2027. Neither Gunn nor Warner Bros. has officially commented on any of these rumors.
