Millie Bobby Brown Opens Up About Social Struggle After Stranger Things

Reflecting on her childhood, Millie Bobby Brown spoke about growing up on the set of Stranger Things and how she didn’t get to experience traditional schooling. The actress now feels she missed out on “socialization,” and now struggles to connect with people her own age.

Millie Bobby Brown discusses Stranger Things and social development challenges

Sharing details on the June 29 episode of the Happy Sad Confused, Brown said, as quoted by OK! Magazine, “Sometimes, when fans come up to me, they’ll be like: ‘Millie!’ And I’ll be like, ‘Ahh!’ And it’s not because I’ve… It’s just that I don’t know how to react sometimes to people my own age. I have a harder time. Adding, “I grew up with primarily men on crews — let’s change that — men over 40 years old. I heard a lot of adult talk growing up, and didn’t really talk about the things you’re meant to talk about as a kid.”

Brown went on to explain that she could spend hours talking about film, but everyday small talk doesn’t come as easily to her. The 22-year-old Emmy-nominated actress shared that meeting her now-husband, Jake Bongiovi, Jon Bon Jovi’s son, marked a major shift in her social life.

She said he is her “complete opposite.” “He went to boarding school and college, so he’s very much a social butterfly,” she explained, adding, “When I met him, I really tried to lean into that, so I’m in my social era.”

Brown also opened up about protecting her mental health, saying she hasn’t had social media on her phone since 2021 and has her manager manage her online presence. “I still want to feel connected to my fans … I don’t want to see what people have to say about it because I don’t care.”

In Stranger Things, the actress portrayed Eleven throughout all five seasons from 2016 to 2025. According to Deadline, following the end of the show, Brown returned to Netflix with the third Enola Holmes instalment, set to premiere on July 1. She also has multiple upcoming projects, including Just Picture It and Nineteen Steps, based on her debut novel.
