Edward Norton Recalls Getting Stoned With Brad Pitt Ahead of Dreaded Movie Screening

Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Edward Norton smoked weed together before an iconic movie premiere. Norton recently reminisced about the incident at the 1999 Venice Film Festival.

What did Edward Norton say about getting stoned with Brad Pitt?

Back in 1999, Norton and Pitt starred together in Fight Club, which underperformed at the box office. However, over time, it earned cult-classic status. Recently, Norton appeared on the Fly on the Wall podcast with David Spade and Dana Carvey. Recalling the events surrounding the film’s premiere, Norton shared a story involving Pitt, marijuana, and laughter amid crowd booing.

Norton said, “I remember they made a very strange decision to premiere that movie at the Venice Film Festival, which didn’t feel like a good fit with subtitles and all these things. And it got booed…

And at the hotel beforehand, Brad had said to me… He kind of pulled me aside and said, ‘How do you think this is gonna go?’ And I said, ‘I don’t think this is gonna go well at all.’ And he said, ‘Me neither. Let’s get stoned.’ And he had flown in private, so he had a big joint. We kind of stood in the back of this hotel, and I’m like a lightweight, and Brad, at the time, was a pro.”

Despite being a dark film and receiving harsh criticism, Pitt, looking “kind of tearful,” leaned over to Norton and said, “I think that’s the best movie I’m ever going to be in.”

The story gained renewed attention after the actors’ recent reunion at the United States vs. Turkey match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in California. Pictures and videos of the pair quickly went viral across social media, sparking a wave of online jokes and memes.

Directed by David Fincher, Fight Club grossed about $101 million worldwide against a reported budget of $65 million. Despite failing to do wonders at the box office, it has since earned strong critical recognition with an 81% Tomatometer and 96% Popcornmeter score on Rotten Tomatoes.

To look like an ultra-lean fighter in the film, Pitt reportedly reduced his body fat to 5 percent by following a high-protein diet and boxing-focused training.
