Meghan Markle’s return to the UK is a “desperate” act for recognition, according to royal biographer Tom Bower. The Sussex family, who relocated to the United States in 2020, will be visiting the UK in July for the first time in four years and are expected to attend the Invictus Games event in Birmingham.
Tom Bower analyzes Meghan Markle’s efforts to regain fame and credibility after stepping back from royal duties
Bower, author of Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, says it’s easy to understand why Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are returning to the institution they left six years ago. Speaking on The Royalist podcast, he said, as quoted by The Daily Beast, “I think you can summarize it in two words: desperation and failure. They’ve run out of ideas, and their finances are basically in jeopardy.”
“And Meghan is someone who is desperate for fame. She’s desperate for recognition. She is desperate for money, of course, and status. And it just seems to her that a visit to the royal family in Britain would restore to her the credibility she once had,” added the 79-year-old former BBC journalist.
The visit of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex comes after Harry’s BBC interview last year, in which he said he wanted “reconciliation” with the royal family. He said, “I can’t see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK at this point,” adding, “I would love reconciliation with my family. There’s no point continuing to fight anymore; life is precious.”
Bower said, “I think, for Harry, it’s worse because Harry is isolated in California. He misses his roots, he misses England, and somehow wants to worm his way back into the affections not only of his own family, but of the British people,” adding, “We’re seeing them effectively crawl on bended knees back to Britain, and they are to be pathetically grateful if the king agrees.”
Although Prince Harry has made several trips to the UK since stepping back from royal duties in 2020, Meghan’s upcoming visit will be her first since the late Queen’s funeral in 2022, reports The Mirror.
Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet also visited the UK in 2022 for the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, months before her passing. It is believed this was the only time King Charles had met his granddaughter. Harry and his father last met on September 10, 2025, at Clarence House in London, where they held a private 55-minute conversation, their first in-person meeting in 19 months.
