King Charles appears alongside the late Prince Philip in a touching Father’s Day photo tribute. The image, shared on Sunday, June 21, shows the father and son sharing a quiet, unguarded moment. Father’s Day in the UK often brings archival photos from the Royal Family, and this year’s nod to the Duke of Edinburgh drew warm reactions from the public.
Palace shares King Charles’ photo with Prince Philip for Father’s Day
Buckingham Palace has released an archival portrait of King Charles with his late father, Prince Philip, in tribute for Father’s Day. The Duke of Edinburgh passed away in April 2021 at age 99, after more than 7 decades of marriage to Queen Elizabeth II.
The heartwarming image, captured 55 years ago, was shared on the official royal family Instagram account on Sunday morning. “Celebrating all Fathers, and thinking of those who wish they could be with their Dads, today,” the official royal family account captioned the image, which was taken in August 1971 when Charles, then the Prince of Wales, received his pilot’s wings at RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire.
Marshal of the RAF, the late Duke beamed next to King Charles in the photo. At the time, the father-son duo was 50 and 22. They wore matching Royal Air Force uniforms, complete with belted tunics and wing brooches. As the senior officer, Prince Philip had earned his wings back in 1953. Hence, his jacket bore an aiguillette plus medals.
Unsurprisingly, the post drew heartfelt reactions from royal watchers, with one writing, “Beautiful photo of King Charles with his Father.” “What a fantastic photo,” gushed another. “Lovely photo of you both. Happy Father’s Day,” read a comment.
Meanwhile, this year’s Father’s Day, held on the third Sunday of June, fell on the same day as Prince William’s 44th birthday. For the double celebration, Kensington Palace released a previously unseen image of William and his 11-year-old daughter, Princess Charlotte, on Instagram. “Happy birthday and Father’s Day to the best Papa in the World! We love you very much. C, G, C & L,” the heartfelt caption read.
