Long before their royal wedding, King Charles allegedly made a request that caught Princess Diana off guard. A royal biography claims that the then-Prince of Wales asked Diana something she considered “improper” at the time. The alleged incident occurred during their fast-paced courtship and has resurfaced decades later. Royal commentators say it provides a telling glimpse of their relationship before they officially committed to one another.
Book reportedly puts fresh focus on King Charles and Princess Diana’s early relationship
More than four decades after their wedding, a story from the early days of King Charles and Princess Diana’s romance is attracting attention. The claim comes from royal biographer Andrew Morton’s “Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words.” In the book, Morton alleged that Charles made a surprising request during one of Diana’s visits to Highgrove House, the country estate he had purchased in Gloucestershire.
Charles reportedly showed Diana around the property. He then asked her to take charge of its interior decoration because he “liked her taste.” The request, however, is said to have left Diana uneasy.
Morton claimed Diana felt it was a “most improper” suggestion since the pair had not yet become engaged. While the conversation may have appeared to be about home décor, royal observers argue that it carried a much deeper meaning.
One royal source told RadarOnline that the incident was “quite extraordinary” because it demonstrated “just how fast the relationship was progressing behind palace walls.” “Most couples would still have been getting to know one another,” the insider said. “Yet there was already an assumption that she would play a role in shaping what was effectively being presented as their future home,” they added.
According to the source, Diana allegedly understood the symbolism immediately. “This wasn’t simply a conversation about curtains, furniture, or color schemes,” said the insider. “It was an invitation to imagine herself living there as the future Princess of Wales,” they added. The source further alleged that Diana may have found the situation both “flattering and unsettling.”
Charles and Diana announced their engagement in February 1981 and married just five months later. Reports have long suggested they had met only a limited number of times before becoming engaged. As one source put it, the Highgrove episode remains “a revealing snapshot” of a relationship that was moving toward the future far faster than most.
