Why David Fincher Wasn’t Chasing a Big Theatrical Release for OUATIH Cliff Booth Movie

David Fincher‘s upcoming Once Upon a Time in Hollywood movie will release on Netflix. The director is also reportedly fine without a theatrical release.

Why didn’t David Fincher push for a big theatrical release for the Cliff Booth movie?

TheWrap recently reported on the upcoming movie, which focuses on Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth character from the Quentin Tarantino movie. According to the report, Fincher was “not lobbying” for a big theatrical release with the movie. Fincher, who has worked with Netflix in the past, seems to have a good enough relationship with the streamer to make movies that will arrive on the platform sooner rather than later.

The report notes that Fincher “is currently developing another movie for them. He knows that they will be streaming movies, first and foremost,” seeming to signal the director is fine with the arrangement as of now.

Of course, due to the nature of the movie, the film will still be getting a theatrical release. The movie is set to release exclusively on Imax screens on November 25, 2026, and then will arrive on Netflix a month later, on December 23, just in time for a Christmas release.

While Brad Pitt will be reprising his role as Cliff Booth in the movie, Leonardo DiCaprio, who played Rick Dalton in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, will not be involved. The star acknowledged late last year that he won’t be involved despite reports that he was being offered a large payday to do so.

The new movie will be yet another collaboration between Fincher and Pitt, who have worked together for three of Pitt’s most memorable movies, including 1995’s Seven, 1999’s Fight Club, and 2008’s The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Originally released in 2019, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood followed the story of a fading actor (DiCaprio) and his stunt double (Pitt) as they navigate the changing world of Hollywood. A subplot of the movie also focused on Charles Manson and the Tate murders. The film was nominated for ten Oscars, winning two (Best Supporting Actor for Pitt and Best Production Design).
