Donald Trump has once again weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Joe Biden’s health and cognitive abilities, sharing his perspective on their interactions before and after the 2024 election. Trump addressed the topic on June 4 as renewed attention focused on Biden’s widely scrutinized debate performance and fresh claims detailed in a memoir by former first lady Jill Biden.
Donald Trump bills Joe Biden as ‘never the sharpest guy’ amid cognitive decline debate
Speaking about Biden, Trump said he did not observe any signs of cognitive decline when the two met following the 2024 election. According to Trump, Biden seemed much the same as he had for decades. “He was the same guy I’ve been watching for a long time,” Trump said, noting that he had followed Biden’s political career for nearly 30-40 years.
At the same time, Trump repeated a familiar criticism, arguing that Biden was “never the sharpest guy” throughout his career. “It wasn’t like he was sharp as a tack,” Trump said, while suggesting that something seemed to go wrong during their highly watched presidential debate. “Something happened,” Trump said, before acknowledging that poor debate performances can happen to any politician. “It could have been me,” Trump remarked. “The question is, did he do badly because he choked? Or because he didn’t have it?” Trump said. “But he didn’t have a good night.”
After his debate performance in June 2024, Joe Biden admitted that he had a bad night on stage. He took responsibility for the performance but rejected claims that it showed a larger decline in his mental abilities. The discussion has gained renewed attention through recent interviews and the memoir View from the East Wing by Jill Biden.
In the book, the former first lady reflects on what happened after the debate and describes how it affected her husband. In the book, she writes that Biden appeared to lose “the essence of who he was” during the televised confrontation, while also maintaining that no staff members had expressed concerns about his condition beforehand. She also recalls a private moment after the debate when Biden reportedly turned to her and asked whether he had performed poorly.
