CBS News Shocker: Veteran 60 Minutes Correspondent Gets Fired

CBS News has fired a veteran 60 Minutes correspondent. The dismissal happened one day after he openly berated the programme’s newly installed leadership in front of the entire staff.

The network confirmed the termination was for cause, and legal analysts immediately speculated that a wrongful dismissal lawsuit could follow. The decision deepens the crisis surrounding editor-in-chief Bari Weiss and her contentious efforts to reshape the network’s news operations.

60 Minutes Correspondent Scott Pelley fired by CBS News

Scott Pelley, a fixture of the flagship newsmagazine for decades, received his firing notice on Tuesday evening. Nick Bilton, the programme’s recently appointed executive producer, shared the news. “Your antipathy to the future of the show has come through loud and clear. And I have heard you,” Bilton wrote. “Your employment with CBS is terminated for cause effective immediately.”

The firing stemmed directly from a staff-wide meeting held on Monday. Pelley had used the forum to interrogate Bilton about last Thursday’s abrupt dismissals of top producers and two correspondents. Bilton, who started his role the very same day, had tried to calm nerves by pledging respect for the programme’s heritage while arguing that modernization was essential.

Pelley was unmoved. He accused Weiss, who did not attend the gathering, of “murdering” the institution. When Bilton insisted Weiss loved the show, Pelley countered, “She does not love this place. She was brought in to kill it, and she’s been doing exactly that.”

CBS executives present a starkly different account. They insist Weiss and her team are attempting to revitalise a fading television news division and pivot its programming toward digital platforms. To accomplish this, Weiss has repeatedly recruited outsiders. Bilton, a filmmaker and former technology reporter with minimal television news background, is the latest example in a series of polarising hires.

Bilton noted that despite Monday’s events, he had hoped a private conversation might repair relations. A meeting that afternoon involving Pelley, Weiss, Bilton, CBS News president Tom Cibrowski, and a human resources representative ended without agreement, a source said. Pelley later informed colleagues he expected to be sacked (via CNN Business).
