New Reboot Movie on Popular Fighting Game in Works – Report

A new movie based on the Dead or Alive fighting games is in development. The report follows publisher Koei Tecmo’s recent announcement that it is reviving the long-dormant video game series with fresh projects.

Dead or Alive movie reboot based on the game rumored to be in works

Known scooper My Time to Shine Hello shared the news on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “A new Dead or Alive movie based on the video game is in development.” No studio, director, or cast names have been attached to the project. However, the rumour suggests that producers see fresh potential in the franchise nearly two decades after its first big-screen attempt fell flat.

The original adaptation, DOA: Dead or Alive, released in cinemas in 2006. Corey Yuen directed the action film from a script by J. F. Lawton, Adam Gross, and Seth Gross. The plot was about four female fighters invited to a secret martial arts tournament.

Initially pitted against one another, the rivals eventually team up to expose the tournament organiser’s hidden agenda. Devon Aoki starred as Kasumi, with Holly Valance playing Christie Allen and Jaime Pressly taking the role of Tina Armstrong.

It collected roughly $7.7 million at the worldwide box office against a $30 million budget. Its delayed United States release in June 2007, handled by The Weinstein Company under Dimension Films, failed to change its fortunes. Critics largely dismissed it, and it remains a footnote in the history of video game adaptations.

Now, the new game movie rumour comes at a telling moment for the Dead or Alive series. During a State of Play broadcast on 12 February, Koei Tecmo revealed two related projects. The first is Dead or Alive 6 Last Round, a PlayStation 5 update of the 2019 fighting game.

It will offer both a full-price version with 29 playable characters, including five fighters previously sold as downloadable content, and a free-to-play edition featuring a rotating roster of four characters at launch. Series producer Hayashi went further, teasing that a new Dead or Alive project is in the works (via Gamespot).

Whether the reported new game movie connects directly to Koei Tecmo’s broader revival remains unclear.
