One of the most emotional moments in the Season 3 finale happens when Rue is fighting for her life. After accidentally taking fentanyl, which she thought was pain medication, she slips into a dream while staying at Ali’s house. That’s when Fez makes a surprise appearance.

Earlier in the season, viewers learn that Fez is in prison, and Rue even shares a heartfelt phone call with him, promising she’ll be there when he finally gets out. That promise ends up carrying a lot of weight, becoming the heart of this powerful dream sequence and giving the scene an extra emotional punch.

While watching television in her dream, Rue sees a news report about a prison escape. The inmate turns out to be Fez, who has apparently broken free and is on the run. Determined to keep her word, Rue tells Ali, “I have to go get him. I promised him that if he ever got out, I would go pick him up. I have to go.” She then heads to Fez’s old convenience store. The building is abandoned and boarded up, but what follows is a warm image of Rue and Fez together, recalling happier times.

Creator Sam Levinson previously explained to EW why he chose not to write Fez out through death. “I fought very hard to keep him clean when he was alive, and losing him was really tough. I felt like if I couldn’t keep him alive in life, then, I could in the show,” he stated. Levinson also said in a press statement that Cloud’s death “deeply affected” him and inspired a season focused on hope despite darkness. According to him, the story became a way to honor Cloud and others whose lives were lost too soon to fentanyl.
