Disney may be revisiting one of its controversial animated classics for a new adaptation. A new report claims that the 1995 film could be getting the live-action treatment.
Disney rumored to be developing a live-action Pocahontas movie
Disney is reportedly developing a live-action Pocahontas movie, according to scooper MyTimeToShineHello on X (formerly Twitter). The insider shared the news on May 29, 2026, posting, “Disney developing a live action Pocahontas movie.”
Disney has not officially confirmed the report as of this writing.
The original animated Pocahontas debuted in 1995 and grossed $346 million worldwide at the box office (via Box Office Mojo). Walt Disney Feature Animation produced the film, which featured the voices of Irene Bedard and Mel Gibson.
The 1995 film won two Academy Awards for Best Musical or Comedy Score and Best Original Song for “Colors of the Wind.” It also took home the Annie Award for Best Animated Feature. The soundtrack reached number one on the Billboard 200 charts during the week of July 22, 1995.
However, a live-action adaptation could face significant challenges given the film’s controversial history. The New York Times reported in 2023 that Disney had appeared to downplay the film and showed no interest in remaking it. The outlet cited the movie’s subject matter and associated historical controversy as key reasons for the studio’s hesitation.
The original film reportedly took considerable creative liberties with the real Pocahontas’ life and drew criticism for historical inaccuracies. Pocahontas was around 10 or 11 when John Smith arrived in 1607, not a young adult (via NY Times). Several people have also noted that no evidence supports a romantic relationship between the two figures. Despite this, the film’s depiction of Pocahontas as an empowered heroine seemingly influenced later Disney films like Mulan and Frozen.
The original animated film is currently available for streaming on Disney+.
