Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s eldest son, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, is reportedly dropping the “Pitt” from his surname legally. The 24-year-old, who was adopted by Angelina in 2002 and later by Pitt in 2006, is severing his connection to his estranged father, much like some of his siblings before him. Reports claim that he will be known as Maddox Chivan Jolie from now on.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s son Maddox reportedly drops ‘Pitt’
A new report from TMZ reveals that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s eldest son, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, is reportedly dropping “Pitt” from his surname. Thus, he is opting to be known as Maddox Chivan Jolie going forward. He listed the reason for the change as personal. This further distances him from his estranged adoptive father, Brad Pitt, who remains a major presence in Hollywood.
The report of the legal name change comes shortly after Maddox dropped the Pitt surname from the credits of Angelina Jolie’s recent film, “Couture”, where Maddox worked as an assistant director. In the film’s credits, he chose to go by Maddox Jolie.
Maddox is not the first among his siblings to drop the Pitt surname. Shiloh Jolie also legally changed her name earlier. Shiloh’s attorney told PEOPLE that she had “made an independent and significant decision following painful events.” Maddox’s other siblings, Zahara Jolie and Vivienne Jolie, have also informally removed the name.
Two of their children, Pax Jolie-Pitt and Knox Jolie-Pitt, still use the surname. It is unclear if they will drop it in the future.
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, perhaps one of the most famous couples in Hollywood history, began dating in 2005 and tied the knot in 2014. But within two years, the pair filed for divorce, leading to widespread scrutiny. Their legal battle continued for years before they signed a settlement agreement in December 2024.
