Iran launched missiles at unidentified targets as Donald Trump weighs a 60-day ceasefire deal. The U.S. intercepted drones and a ballistic missile aimed at Kuwait amid rising tensions.
Iran reportedly launches missiles as Trump has yet to respond to ceasefire
Iran’s armed forces fired missiles at unidentified targets late Thursday local time, CNBC reported, citing Fars. The latest military action in southern Iran followed hours after the Pentagon confirmed earlier strikes. Iran had launched a ballistic missile toward Kuwait and deployed attack drones near the Strait. U.S. and Kuwaiti forces successfully intercepted all incoming threats throughout the day.
American and Iranian negotiators have meanwhile reached terms to temporarily end the three-month-old war. President Donald Trump has not yet given final approval to the 60-day memorandum of understanding. The proposed deal would extend an ongoing ceasefire and begin nuclear negotiations between the two nations. American officials confirmed Iran signed off on the agreement, though Tehran has not confirmed.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remained noncommittal about the deal’s status during a White House briefing. “The teams have been going back and forth,” Bessent said at the press conference. Trump maintains “several red lines” for any agreement with Tehran in the short or long term. Those demands include Iran’s surrendering its highly enriched uranium and abandoning nuclear weapon pursuits.
Tensions continued escalating despite diplomatic progress between the two nations this week. U.S. Central Command called Iran’s missile launch toward Kuwait an “egregious ceasefire violation” on Thursday.
The Pentagon also confirmed five one-way attack drones posed clear threats near the Strait of Hormuz. American forces intercepted all drones and prevented a “sixth launch” from “Bandar Abbas.”
The Trump administration also ramped up economic pressure through new sanctions against Tehran this week. The Treasury sanctioned Iran’s Persian Gulf Strait Authority as part of “Operation Economic Fury.” Trump additionally warned Oman against allowing any tolling system in the critical waterway. “Oman will behave just like everybody else, or we’ll have to blow ’em up,” Trump said.
