Barney Frank Reflected on Donald Trump in Final Interviews Before His Death

Former Massachusetts congressman, liberal icon, and the first openly gay member of Congress, Barney Frank, had something to say about Donald Trump in his final moments. Frank died on May 19, in hospice care at his home in Maine. He spent his last days issuing statements to various channels. There, he revealed that he regretted not living to see the downfall of Donald Trump, whom he called an “idiot savant”.

Barney Frank shared his last wish was to witness Donald Trump’s downfall

In his last interviews, Barney Frank expressed his profound sadness over the trajectory of modern American politics, especially right-wing populism spearheaded by Donald Trump. “One of my regrets,” Frank told Politico as he was in hospice at his Maine home in April, “is that I won’t see the continued implosion of Donald Trump.”

In an interview with Boston-area radio station WBUR, the 86-year-old expanded on his distaste for the current US president: “As to Trump, I have developed my theory about him: It’s not just that he’s bad on all these values, but he is an idiot savant,” Frank said. “He has just one talent: an ability to exploit anger that got him into power. But having gotten into power, he’s got nothing left, and that’s why now he’s just floundering.”

He also said that Trump is fast losing popularity over critical issues like the Iran war, his conflict with the Pope, and immigration, among others. Frank also shared his concerns for the liberal Democrats. He stressed that while the progressives are right about many issues, the left wing should stop forcing “politically unacceptable” agendas on the public prematurely.

Frank said that Trump was very good at “exploiting voters’ discontent,” but his appeal is waning with each passing day. Though the president and the late congressman never shared an in-office timeline, they have a history of conflicts as Trump started to get more and more involved with Republican politics.
