Wolverine’s original handlers may finally be getting their live-action due. A new project is reportedly in development, built around the Canadian super-team that first crossed paths with Logan, expanding Marvel Studios’ mutant plans well beyond the usual suspects.
Marvel rumored to be working on a new Alpha Flight project
Marvel Studios is reportedly developing an Alpha Flight project, according to scooper MyTimeToShineHello. The insider posted on X that “An Alpha Flight project is in development at Marvel Studios.” No further details about the format, release window, or creative team have surfaced.
The scoop ties into a separate report from the same insider, who claims the Mutant Saga will feature multiple mutant-focused projects beyond the X-Men. MyTimeToShineHello posted that “The Mutant Saga will have MULTIPLE Mutant-focused projects, not just X-Men.” Alpha Flight’s roster includes mutant members Northstar and Aurora, linking the team directly to the broader mutant slate.
Alpha Flight is Marvel’s premier Canadian superhero team, created by John Byrne. The team debuted in The Uncanny X-Men #120 in April 1979. The team was originally designed to serve as part of Wolverine’s backstory. Marvel published the original Alpha Flight ongoing series from 1983 to 1994, running for 130 issues.
The classic roster includes Guardian (James MacDonald Hudson), Northstar, Aurora, Sasquatch, Shaman, Snowbird, Puck, and Marrina Smallwood. Most team members carry distinctly Canadian attributes, including Inuit, First Nations, or French heritage. The team traditionally operates under Department H, a fictional branch of Canada’s Department of National Defence.
Alpha Flight has appeared in animated form on the X-Men episode “Repo Men” and as a playable team in Marvel Strike Force. The team has never received a live-action adaptation. Marvel Studios has not officially confirmed the project or attached talent to develop it.
Marvel’s current slate includes Avengers: Doomsday, the X-Men reboot, and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. The Alpha Flight project would expand the Mutant Saga’s international scope beyond American-based teams.
