The conversation started in a playful way, with Jimmy Kimmel saying that buying tampons is almost a relationship milestone. This was after Elizabeth Banks asked if he had ever bought tampons for a “serious girlfriend”. Kimmel clarified that he had actually done it for his wife. That’s when the story took a turn.
Kimmel recalled a moment when he had to rush to a supermarket late at night while on vacation because his wife needed tampons. What he didn’t expect, he said, was the overwhelming number of options waiting for him in the aisle.
“There are hundreds of choices,” he explained, noting, “there are a lot of choices which I was not told about before the visit to the supermarket, and there was a woman in the aisle looking at them, and I had this moment where I’m like, am I going to ask for help and seem like the weirdest creep imaginable? No, I did not and guess what, I did bring the wrong tampons.”
Kimmel handed over the purchase, only to be told he had picked the wrong product entirely. “This is not what I needed at all,” he recalled his wife saying. Looking back, Banks jokingly suggested he could have avoided the situation by simply buying multiple options to be safe. Kimmel admitted that the idea hadn’t crossed his mind at the time.
Kimmel is married to Molly McNearney, a TV writer and executive producer for Jimmy Kimmel Live! They got married in 2013 and have two children, Jane and Billy. They also work together on the show, where McNearney plays a key role as a creative force.
