Netflix has officially ordered a series adaptation of Carley Fortune’s novel This Summer Will Be Different, hinting at its continued focus on expanding its lineup of romance-led books following Bridgerton and Can This Love Be Translated?. The project has been commissioned as a 10-episode series, with Sphere Media set to produce.

The story follows Lucy, a young woman navigating her twenties. Her life becomes increasingly complicated due to her connection with her best friend’s brother, Felix. Set across multiple summers on Prince Edward Island, the narrative tracks how their relationship develops over time, despite the circumstances that make it difficult.

In the source material, Lucy returns to the island each year, where her bond with Felix evolves with every visit. The adaptation will be filmed on location in Prince Edward Island, with additional production taking place in Toronto.

Fortune has pointed to her personal experiences as an influence on the story. In a statement, she stated, “I fell in love with Prince Edward Island first in the pages of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables and again when I visited with my best friend in my early twenties. That vacation, the beauty of the island, the warmth of its people, and the friendships that sustain us—are the foundation of This Summer Will Be Different (via The Hollywood Reporter).”

The series is being developed by Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart, who will serve as creators and showrunners. They will also executive produce alongside Fortune, Jennifer Kawaja, and Elise Cousineau.

Casting details along with production and release timelines, have not yet been announced.
