JD Vance’s Recent ‘Baby’ Comment on Wife Usha Draws Backlash

Vice President JD Vance is getting backlash following a personal remark he made about his wife, Usha Vance, during a speech in Michigan. What was said as a story about expanding their family has instead ignited a firestorm on social media.

JD Vance talks about his wife Usha during Michigan visit

During a nearly 40-minute speech at Engineering Design Services Inc. in Auburn Hills, Michigan, Vance touched on various policy topics, including gas prices, manufacturing jobs, and a recent attack on a synagogue. However, it was a brief anecdote about his family that caught the internet’s attention.

JD Vance informed the crowd that his wife, Usha, is expecting their fourth child. “Usha is now 22 weeks pregnant with baby number four, so we’re very excited about that,” he said. He then recounted the conversation that led to the pregnancy. “And I remember when we decided to run for vice president,” Vance shared. “I said, ‘Honey, I really want to have a fourth kid.’ And she said, ‘Well, you can become vice president, or you can have a fourth baby. But, ladies and gentlemen, I am persuasive ’cause I got both.”

The comment immediately drew a largely negative reaction on X (formerly Twitter). One user wrote, “I despise when men say ‘we’ abt running for office or being pregnant, and this guy is the embodiment of that hatred.” Another commenter stated simply, “Christ on a cracker. He is so damn cringe.” A third user summarized the perceived dynamic, saying, “Vance: My wife said, ‘No.’ Vance: I did it anyway.” Another one accused him of adhering to a “Barefoot & Pregnant school of politics.”

Aside from the personal remarks, Vance’s visit to Michigan was primarily policy-focused. He assured the audience that the Trump administration is actively working to address economic concerns. The vice president said the administration is “doing everything we can” to bring gas prices back down, mentioning actions on strategic reserves and hinting at further steps within the next 48 hours.
