Sony Pictures and Pop Mart have officially greenlit a live-action Labubu movie, bringing the adorable monsters to the big screen. According to reports, Paddington director Paul King will helm and co-write the project alongside an acclaimed screenwriter who has received multiple awards.

The news came during The Monsters’ 10th anniversary exhibition in Paris. It gave fans a first look at the world behind the story. The film will combine live-action and CGI to bring Labubu and the other characters to life. Producers include Michael Schaefer (The Martian), Wenxin She (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, Wish Dragon), and Paul King. Kasing Lung, creator of Labubu and The Monsters, will serve as executive producer. Meanwhile, Brittany Morrissey will manage production for Sony Pictures. The movie is still in early development, but it aims to stay true to the original books (via Deadline).
Kasing Lung, born in Hong Kong and brought up in the Netherlands, first introduced Labubu in The Monsters Trilogy of picture books, starting in 2015. The books quickly became a global phenomenon for their whimsical storytelling and unique monster designs, making them perfect for cinematic adaptation. Fans of the franchise have been eagerly awaiting a live-action version.
Steven Levenson joins Labubu movie as co-writer
Award-winning playwright and screenwriter Steven Levenson is teaming up with Paul King to co-write the screenplay. Levenson has a reputation in the industry, known for Dear Evan Hansen (Tony Award), tick, tick… BOOM! (WGA nomination), and Fosse/Verdon (Emmy nomination). He brings strong experience in character-driven stories that should add depth to the whimsical monster world.
