Ed Sheeran Revisits GOT Cameo Backlash: ‘I Just Get S*** On for Things’

Ed Sheeran recently spoke about the backlash he faced after his cameo appearance in the hit HBO show Game of Thrones. Sheeran has spoken about his appearance and the backlash in the past, but revisited it recently on Benny Blanco’s podcast.

Ed Sheeran on getting backlash for Game of Thrones cameo when other musicians didn’t

Musician Ed Sheeran made a surprise cameo in Game of Thrones during the Season 7 premiere, which was met with a lot of backlash at the time. Both Sheeran and the series’ respective popularities were at a notable high at that point.

Sheeran broke down the appearance and the reaction in a recent podcast appearance. Speaking to Benny Blanco in his new Friends Keep Secrets podcast, Sheeran said, “I feel like I definitely ruffled some feathers being on Game of Thrones.” He explained, “What I said is, ‘People love that show. If anyone gets asked to be in that show, it’s an instant yes,’…I said yes. I enjoyed doing it.”

Moreover, there were other musicians who made brief cameos, just like Sheeran. But he became the only one who faced the severe backlash. “Members of Coldplay [were] at the Red Wedding. [Gary Lightbody] from Snow Patrol is in there. Chris Stapleton’s in it as like a White Walker,” Sheeran pointed out.

The musician identified a couple of reasons the backlash may have happened. “I think at the time I was very omnipresent and just everywhere. So, I think it was quite jarring,” Sheeran said, recalling how he was very popular at the time. He also added that things like these “happen quite a lot in my career. I just get s— on for things.”

The Game of Thrones universe, meanwhile, continues with spin-off shows like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
