Donald Trump marked Team USA’s Olympic gold medal victory with an unexpected gesture at the White House. Following a high-profile appearance during his State of the Union address, the president hosted the men’s hockey team and served a familiar fast-food spread as part of the celebration.

Donald Trump hosted the USA men’s national hockey team at the White House after their Olympic gold medal victory over Canada. The players attended his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, where he introduced them during his speech. “To prove that point, here with us tonight is a group of winners who just made the entire nation proud: the men’s gold medal Olympic hockey team,” Trump said.

During the address, Trump also stated, “Our country is winning again,” and added, “In fact, we’re winning so much that we really don’t know what to do about it.” The chamber responded with chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A!” as the team was recognized. Trump announced that goaltender Connor Hellebuyck would receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Following the speech, videos circulated online showing the team being served McDonald’s double cheeseburgers at the White House. One social media post stated, “President Trump catered McDONALD’s for Team USA at the White House today, bringing in STACKS of double cheeseburgers.” The video showed stacks of burgers arranged on tables while patriotic music played in the background.

The team had traveled to Washington after celebrating their Olympic win in Miami. Reports noted they attended a nightclub event before boarding Air Force One for the trip. The NHL regular season resumed on Wednesday, though it was unclear when players would return to their respective teams.

This was not the first time Trump served fastfood to a championship team. In 2019, he provided McDonald’s, Wendy’s, and Burger King to Clemson’s national championship football team during a government shutdown.

At that time, it was reported that the food was ordered due to limited White House staffing.
