Prince William & Wife Ignore Questions on Ex-Prince Andrew Arrest at BAFTAs

Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, returned to the public spotlight on Sunday night. However, they found themselves in an uncomfortable situation. Just three days after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested at Sandringham on his 66th birthday, the couple attended the BAFTA Awards at London’s Royal Festival Hall on February 22.

Prince William and Kate Middleton asked if ‘monarchy is in peril’ at BAFTAs

William, 43, chose a burgundy velvet dinner jacket for the occasion. Meanwhile, Kate, 44, wore a sweeping, floor-length pink gown that stood out against the dark winter evening. Organizers shut down the red carpet to accommodate their arrival. Still, the tension of the week lingered. At one point, an attendee asked a pointed question: “Is the monarchy in peril?” The couple did not publicly engage with the remark, continuing down the carpet as planned.

The outing marked the first time in three years that William and Kate attended the awards together, their last BAFTA red carpet appearance being in 2023. William appeared solo in 2024, expressing regret at the time that his wife could not join him as she underwent cancer treatment.

The couple skipped last year’s ceremony together, making Sunday night’s appearance feel significant, not only professionally but personally. The pair were said to have spent most of the previous week with their children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, 7. The latter were enjoying their school break.

William attended in his official capacity as President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. During the ceremony, he is scheduled to present the BAFTA Fellowship Award, the Academy’s highest honor, to Dame Donna Langley, Chair of NBCUniversal Entertainment, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to film. The lineup includes a performance of “Golden” by K-Pop Demon Hunters. Moreover, British singer-songwriter Jessie Ware will deliver a tribute during the In Memoriam segment.
