A major MCU villain previously rumored to be in Avengers: Doomsday is reportedly no longer part of the film. However, a new rumor suggests that they will be appearing in the follow-up, Avengers: Secret Wars, instead. The former film will be dropping in theaters at the end of this year. Meanwhile, the latter hits the big screen towards the end of next.
Thanos won’t be in Avengers: Doomsday but could be in Secret Wars
According to a new rumor, Thanos, who served as the main villain of the MCU’s Infinity Saga, will not be in Avengers: Doomsday. However, he will reportedly show up in the sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.
The rumor comes from notable scooper MyTimetoShineHello. They wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “OMG Thanos is not in Doomsday but he’s coming back in Secret Wars.”
The above rumor follows a previous one from fellow scooper James Mack. He shared on X that Thanos was no longer in Avengers: Doomsday. “At least not anymore,” he added.
Notably, both of these are unverified rumors. Accordingly, they should be treated as such until official confirmation about Thanos’ involvement in Doomsday and Secret Wars is shared by Marvel Studios.
The main MCU timeline version of Thanos was last seen in Avengers: Endgame. He was killed at the beginning of the movie by Thor after the Avengers learned he destroyed the Infinity Stones to prevent anyone from using them to resurrect half of the universe he snapped away from existence. A 2014 version of himself from an alternate timeline later surfaced as the main antagonist of the movie. However, he was defeated at the end by the combined might of the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and their allies.
Since then, alternate versions of the character have appeared in the animated series What If…?
Avengers: Doomsday is currently slated for a theatrical release on December 18, 2026. Meanwhile, Avengers: Secret Wars follows suit on December 17, 2027. Anthony and Joe Russo directed the former and will reprise directorial duties for the latter.
