The new season focuses on Jason Segel’s Jimmy as he prepares for his daughter Alice to leave for college, while Harrison Ford’s Paul continues to come to terms with his Parkinson’s diagnosis. Jessica Williams’ Gaby and the rest of the group also confront new personal challenges.

Early reviews have been strongly positive, with many highlighting the show’s balance of humor and vulnerability. Decider’s Nicole Gallucci praised the season’s emotional range, writing that she was moved throughout its complete episodes run while still laughing at its sharp jokes. She wrote, “From witty one-liners and endearingly exaggerated personalities to physical comedy, musical numbers, and more it bears repeating that Shrinking is very funny and never maudlin.”

Gallucci noted that the series now allows “highs and lows to co-exist,” adding that the finale leaves viewers with “a clear sense of closure within the group.” She concluded by saying she is already hoping for a fourth season.

Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com wrote, “Shrinking keeps improving because it takes the time with all of its team, giving season-long narratives to Sean (Luke Tennie), Brian (Michael Urie), Liz (Christa Miller), and even Derek (Ted McGinley) this year, too.” He also credited the show’s success to cast members.

FandomWire critic Sean Boelman described Shrinking Season 3 as warmer and more sentimental than previous ones. Meredith Loftus of Collider suggested that the third season could work as a satisfying conclusion if the series were to end here. “It’s hopeful without feeling too saccharine, honoring characters’ journeys and leaving off in a satisfying place,” she wrote.
