ABC’s Matt Gutman is moving to CBS, as per the latest reports. This comes after both Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson announced their respective departures from the network. It is not yet clear if Gutman is slated to become the replacement anchor.
Is Matt Gutman replacing Maurice DuBois or John Dickerson on CBS Evening News?
While it has not been confirmed if Matt Gutman is replacing Maurice DuBois or John Dickerson on CBS Evening News, the Los Angeles Times reported on December 6, 2025, that Gutman is leaving ABC to join CBS. Speculations suggest that he will indeed replace Maurice DuBois and John Dickerson, who are both exiting the show in December.
While speculation remains strong about Dickerson taking over the CBS Evening News, reports state that he is joining the network as a correspondent, instead. Gutman becomes the first major on-air hire by CBS News’ new editor-in-chief, Bari Weiss, who took over the position in October.
Gutman’s long run with ABC extends back to 2008. He has appeared on multiple shows for the network, including ABC World News Tonight, Good Morning America, Nightline, and 20/20. In 2020, Dickerson was suspended for incorrectly reporting that all the children of Kobe Bryant died. He was suspended a second time in 2021 for violating Disney’s COVID-19 policies by visiting a Los Angeles hospital without prior permission from management.
If Matt Gutman does not take over the role of either Maurice DuBois or John Dickerson, CBS will still need to replace them on CBS Evening News.
On October 27 of this year, Dickerson announced his departure on his Instagram page. He did not specify a reason for this. He worked with CBS for 16 years.
Days later, on December 4, his co-anchor, DuBois, also announced his departure from the network with an emotional post on Instagram.
This marks a major change of direction for CBS. The network is yet to confirm who will head the CBS Evening News.
