NCIS may have just returned with Season 23 last month, but it already promises to uncover some prominent storylines, including the return of a major character. In a recent interview, Sean Murray, who plays Special Agent Timothy McGee on the long-running military police procedural series, opened up about what fans can expect from the upcoming episodes of the ongoing season, while also teasing the comeback of a key character.

During a conversation with TVLine, Murray revealed some vital plot points that the current NCIS installment will uncover regarding McGee and Alden Parker. Additionally, he noted that an important character that viewers haven’t seen “in a very long time” could make an appearance in the near future.
“Someone from the world of NCIS who everyone knows very well but hasn’t seen in a very long time may pop up,” the JAG alum said.
While Murray shied away from naming the returning character, the official description for NCIS Season 23 Episode 9 corroborates his account of an upcoming comeback. “Knight is given her first NCIS: Elite mission, which involves tracking down a former member of the team,” reads the official logline of the show’s December 16 episode.
In accordance, viewers have speculated that the returning character could be Cote de Pablo’s Ziva David, who recently headlined her own NCIS spin-off along with Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo. While DiNozzo made a surprise appearance in Season 21 last year, it’s been five years since David last featured in an NCIS episode. Other potential candidates for the cameo include former series regulars Forensic Specialist Abby Sciuto and Special Agent Eleanor Bishop.
Murray then teased a major development in his NCIS character’s life in Season 23, stating, “We’re gonna get some very big, unexpected family-related news from McGee. When they told me about this idea, I was very excited, and I think it’s going to come together.”
The 48-year-old actor also confirmed that the season will explore the ongoing mystery surrounding Alden Parker’s connection with Lily, adding, “We’re gonna dive more into that. We’re gonna find out more about that.”
