Jay Lethal On Hitting The Wrestling Lottery, Staying Versatile, ROH Keeping A Great Roster Over Time

Jay Lethal recently spoke with Brian Fritz for Sporting News; you can read a few highlights below:

Jay Lethal comments on his luck in wrestling so far:

“I really feel like, when it comes to wrestling, I feel like I won the lottery. I’ve gotten to do so much and I don’t think I fully grasp just how much I’ve gotten to do. When I fully grasp that, I think my brain is going to explode.

I was the world champion of Ring of Honor, a company known around the world for its wrestling. I got to wrestle Ric Flair. I got to hang out in a bar and wrestle with the likes of Kevin Nash. I met and worked with Hulk Hogan. I wrestled Kurt Angle live on pay-per-view. I’ve gotten to do so many things that some people only dream of. So why wouldn’t you be smiling constantly?”

Lethal comments on being versatile:

“One thing I’ve strived to do in the professional wrestling business is be versatile. I like to think that I can be put in any position on the card or any storyline and make it work. Like ‘Macho Man’ said one time, (in his best Randy Savage voice) ‘I’m a chameleon, yeah.’ I like to think that I’m that chameleon. It doesn’t really matter what role you put them in, just do it and they will find a way to make it work.

“The ‘Macho Man’ one is easier to do because I don’t have to yell. The Flair one I gotta yell so the ‘Macho Man’ one is easier to do. Me and my girl were out the other day. I can sneak that voice in while we’re eating but if I did Flair randomly, I’m sure everyone would turn and look like what the hell is this guy yelling about. It’s harder to do the Ric Flair when you’re trying to be incognito.”

Lethal comments on ROH always having a top tier talent roster:

“When I was here before, we had great wrestlers like Bryan Danielson, CM Punk, Nigel McGuinness, Samoa Joe. These guys are amazing. You look now and we still have amazing wrestlers. The Young Bucks are incredible. Jay Briscoe is one of the best wrestlers in the world as a singles and when you put him with Mark Briscoe, his brother, he’s one of the greatest tag team wrestlers in the world. Ring of Honor has always done a great job of having, whatever time period you look at, one of the greatest rosters in the world. When it comes to the roster, sure, the names are different but the talent is still there.”
