The Detroit Free Press has published a new article drawing parallels between Donald Trump’s Presidential “character” and the antihero heels of the professional wrestling world.

Following the highly controversial – now known to be hacked – video which was published from Trump’s personal Twitter account, depicting him beating up a CNN employee outside of a wrestling ring, the link between wrestling and Trump’s Presidency was pondered.

“In our terminology, he’s playing it to the hilt,” said former World Wrestling Entertainment writer Dan Madigan, of Trump’s ability to have cultivated an antihero Presidential persona which borrows from pro wrestling ideologies. “His demeanor, duration of his walk to the podium, his playing to the crowd. … Pure Undertaker,” Madigan added.

Domenic Cotter, a producer who in the mid-2000s cut backstage segments for WWE, also weighed-in on the Trump analogy, saying he thinks the wrestling parallels are “uncanny”. Cotter likened certain aspects of Trump’s behavior to that of WWE Hall of Famer “Stone Cold” Steve Austin’s Attitude Era character, citing Ausin’s anti-establishment and anti-authority characteristics as traits possessed by Trump.

“In wrestling terminology, he cut a promo on that CNN reporter and got over him, basically,” Cotter said. “In wrestling, some swarmy heel is going on and on and on and the baby face quips a response right back and the audience goes crazy.”

The article goes on to compare Trump to former WWE star CM Punk’s character, and analyzes Trump supporting a “global heel” like Russian President Vladimir Putin.
