On whether or not some of Bret’s more outspoken criticisms of WWE affects his relationship with the company:

BH: I don’t think it really phases anybody. To my knowledge anyway. I think they understand that I’ve been in the business too long and I’m entitled to my opinion. Like Steve Austin is or anybody else. I’m entitled to my opinion. I think my opinion is usually constructive. I might not say the best things about some wrestlers or some storylines or this pay-per-view or that pay-per-view. I think it’s always constructive. They can either take it or leave it. At the same time I think my relationship with WWE is kind of… it’s understood they screwed me over at Survivor Series years ago. I think I can be critical of them on all kinds of levels. I don’t think they feel it’s nasty where I am just saying all this stuff just to be negative. If I said I didn’t like this pay-per-view it’s probably for a lot of reasons. Whatever I’ve said, I know last time I woke up to do this show after WrestleMania (laughs) I was pretty cranky when I did the show. I really was disappointed in WrestleMania this year. AND, I was disappointed in the Royal Rumble this year. Both of them could have been much more well thought out. My criticisms are legitimate. At least I can cite reasons why I didn’t like this or that. At the same time, when I see something I do like, like Nakamura and Sami Zayn’s match. Or Asuka when she wrestled Bayley. They had such a great match. I can say good things and I am not obligated. I am not under any kind of umbrella where they can tap me on the shoulder and tell me to say more favorable things or anything like that. We don’t have any kind of obligation in that regard. Whereas Steve Austin maybe has to be a little more careful about what he says or certain guys like Mick Foley maybe. They’ve got TV shows with the company. I am not sure what their positions are either but for me I always speak freely. I speak my mind. If we are doing a podcast like this I don’t want to waste anyone’s time just suckling up to WWE and trying to praise everything they are doing when I don’t really love it. My biggest criticisms of WWE have been mostly at the writers. Whoever “they” are. I don’t know who “they” are, these writers. These backstage script writers. Maybe it’s you Nick. I think that as far as the wrestlers and a lot of the talent, I always praise the talent. I like a lot of the talent. There’s a lot of great young talent out there. I enjoy watching a lot of them over and over. There’s a lot of them that are more my style. Like Cesaro, I am glad they are giving him more of a rub lately. Kevin Owens, certain guys that are more what I like. Hopefully that is what comes across when I do these podcasts and it’s not just vindictive criticism just for no reason.
