WWE Smackdown Results (8/23) – Axel Challenges Punk, Christian vs Alberto, Bryan vs Barrett Steel Cage Match

Bill Pritchard

Vickie Guerrero is shown yelling at someone on the phone, and she says Daniel Bryan had no business in the ring. She says she wants someone to teach him a lesson, then she hangs up as Wade Barrett walks in the room. Wade says he has something in common with her and the McMahon family, and that is a strong dislike for Bryan. He says he wants to make sure Bryan never gets a rematch, so if she puts him in a match with him he will get it done. Vickie says it's a great idea, then she thinks of match stipulations before deciding on a steel cage match, then Wade smiles as he leaves the room.

Curtis Axel (w/ Paul Heyman) vs Cody Rhodes

Axel stomps Cody in the corner and goes for a clothesline, but Cody ducks and puts him in a waistlock. Axel reverses it and kicks him in the face, then he backdrops him on the apron but Cody comes back with a springboard dropkick. He heads up top as Axel rolls outside, then he goes after him but Axel throws him backfirst into the apron. We get back from a break to see Axel hit some elbow drops for a near fall, then snapmares Cody and goes for another pin attempt. Cody tries to whip him but Axel reverses it and clotheslines him, then Cody comes back with a kick to the stomach and sets up a Disaster Kick. Axel ducks and kicks him, then he whips him but Cody floats over and gets a near fall before hitting a clothesline. Cody heads up top but Heyman stands on the steps and distracts him, then Axel crotches him on the turnbuckles and hits a hangman's facebuster for the win.

Winner – Curtis Axel

Postmatch, Heyman enters the ring and says he stands there in agony, and it's all because of the actions of CM Punk. He says the fans will choke on the cheers for Punk because he isn't talking about obvious, physical pain, but the emotions he's feeling right now. Heyman says he made Punk the best in the world, but now he's a loser who lost at Summerslam, and now he's on a downward sprial. Heyman says Punk never stood a chance without him, and Punk is lost but Axel is on the right path, and he just keeps winning. He says no one can beat Axel for the Intercontinental Championship, then Axel says the problem is that Punk doesn't deserve a title match. Axel says Punk assaulted him with a chair, but he will finish the job that Brock Lesnar started at Summerslam. He challenges Punk to a match on RAW, then he says his future is better than Punk's, because he is more athletic, and he has the better man in his corner, Paul Heyman.
