Bruno Sammartino

Update: No Plans to Build Bruno Sammartino Statue in Pittsburgh

However, David Morehouse says there are no plans for such a statue. Morehouse is the president and CEO of the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins. The team owns the developmental rights to the land once occupied by the Civic Arena, which is right across the street from the club’s current home, Consol Energy Center. The Penguins played at the Civic Arena from 1967-2010.

Morehouse did not comment beyond saying that a Sammartino statue – or any statue – was not planned for the Civic Arena site.

But conventional wisdom holds that the Penguins would not erect any statue in close proximity to their statue of Mario Lemieux, the club’s owner and greatest player. The Lemieux statue, which was dedicated in March 2012, stands directly across the street from the Civic Arena site.
