Kevin McElvaney’s Take On ECW – 01/08/08 Edition

Aaaaand here’s the weekly take!

“ECdub” opened up this week with the 15 Minutes of Fame match. Basically, it was a mini iron man tag team match, named for Morrison’s old gimmick while he was champion. The teams, of course: Miz / Morrison vs. Yang / Moore.

Very good match. Not the best these teams have had, but the match felt hella important. The final tally was a tie, each team with one fall. Because of the stalemate, the champions retained. Is this the end of the program? I hope not.

Tazz was, once again, interviewing Colin Delaney. They recapped what had happened to Colin in his last two WWE appearances. (For those of you who missed it, he was destroyed by both Shelton Benjamin and Big Daddy V on separate weeks.) They were really playing up the injuries, with his arm and ribs all taped up. Funny stuff. I hope he comes out more bandaged every week than he was the week prior.

Tazz announced that Delaney’s opponent would be Mark Henry. Joey Styles’ prediction: “This will be like a grizzly bear mauling a chipmunk.” God, I love Joey Styles.

The prediction was accurate. Another squash, but Colin is being given a push, in a weird way.

Kelly X’s 2 and Layla Le competed in a dance-off. Diva Search contestant, Lena (who has apparently been signed to a contract) was the host. She awarded the contest to herself.

WAY too long of a segment. Is it bad that I’m bored watching sexy women wiggle around in skimpy clothing?

Shelton Benjamin BACKSTAGE promo (good!) where he, once again, explained the finer points of being a prospector. He kept making references to gold nuggets which…the way they were delivered set off my adolescent side, and I kept making number two jokes to myself.

Anyway, the gist of it is that Shelton is going to win the Royal Rumble. Good promo, but you might wanna run that by Ric Flair first, Shelton.

Despite losing fair and square last week, Chavo Guerrero got another shot at a shot at the ECW title in the main event. Gotta love the booking where guys get ten shots before they’re finally out of contention.

There was some good wrestling in this match. After all, they’re both talented guys. I think Chavo wrestles better against some people who bring out the better side of him. I’m not talking about anyone “carrying” him, because I don’t even really believe in that. I’m just saying he seems more inspired in some matches than others.

Chavo exposed the turnbuckle pad, THEN went to use the ECW title belt. Punk won by DQ, then hit the Go 2 Sleep after the match.

$300 in JBL confetti money says Chavo STILL gets another title shot, despite blowing it two weeks in a row. Unreal.

Time to rate this week’s show! Good first half of the show. It pushed along storylines nicely. The Divas segment was a waste of time, and the ending of the show was kind of weak. Still, maybe…JUST MAYBE…Chavo is out of the title picture.

No offense Chavo, it just doesn’t make sense to book people this way and then give them title shots.

Anyway, I’m giving this week’s show a 6.5 (average) rating, with the hope that the Chavo-Punk storyline will be put away for a while.

Tune in next week to see if it actually is.

Not likely.
