Column: March Madness is Here! By: Chris “The Authority” Schultz

March Madness

By: Chris âThe Authority❠Schultz

Jeff Hardy gets suspended and his house burns down, grown men are dressed up as sharks and Japanese food, a belt changes hands on a live RAW, Matt Morgan turns American Gladiator, and Floyd âMoney❠Mayweather Jr. gets a taste of pro wrestling by getting thrown out of the ring by the Big Show. Yep, that must mean its March again. Let the madness begin! The term âMarch Madness❠is usually reserved for college basketball, but it serves as a perfect fit for what goes on this month in the world of professional wrestling as well. Most of the spotlight is reserved for the Road to Wrestlemania, but itâs the industry news and latest happenings, that catches the attention of us all during this fabulous month. (Editors Note: The Authorityâs Birthday happens to fall in March as well. No bias here! ï )

It may just be my opinion, but it seems to me that all wrestling organizations seem to be at their best during this time. With the WWE, itâs obvious, because they are pushing their biggest show of the year. However, I believe this brings out the best in all the others, from TNA to ROH etc. I wouldnât be surprised to see an awesome Impact this Thursday on Spike. On top of that, TNAâs first live show happens in the month of March. Coincidence? I think not! As a matter fact, itâs a smart move by Jarrett and company. Why not feed off the excitement that surrounds Wrestlemania?

Itâs too bad that the WWE doesnât keep this momentum going throughout the year. Despite what the ratings might be, I really enjoyed last Monday’s 3 hour RAW broadcast. It was a lot of fun to see them put on rematches from past Wrestlemanias. And for once, I was impressed with this last week’s Smackdown. Yes, I was in attendance since it was in my backyard here in Chicago, but a cage match featuring one of Ric Flair’s last blood baths is worth the price of admission alone. It also marks the first time in several years I saw a cage match live. What a privilege it was to see HBK, Edge, Chavo, Undertaker, and Ric Flair all surrounded by steel. If McMahon could only put on these types of shows year round, more fans would tune in!

Speaking of cages, TNA is starting to promote the upcoming Lockdown PPV, where every match will be held in a ring surrounded by six sides of steel. This is truly one of their best pay per views of the year. Mix that in with a Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle showdown and you might have yourself an instant classic! Sorry Christian. I am pretty sure both competitors are going to take their rivalry to the next level. Could this be the year Samoa Joe finally wins the big one?

Can you feel the excitement and anticipation in the air? What a month March is turning out to be. In closing, I wish everyone a Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Happy Easter! Enjoy the magic of the NCAA Tournament, but most of all, enjoy Wrestlemania 24 and all the hype that surrounds this great showcase of immortals.
