Tonight marks the debut edition of the Sports Buffet, hosted by ‘Chef’ Tim Dix, features a look at professional sports in Atlanta, as well as providing the latest on the Jackets and Bulldogs. Dave O’Brien, the Braves beat writer for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, will join Tim Dix to discuss the latest news and off season moves as the team prepares for the 2009 season. Also, expect analysis on the Super Bowl matchup between the Steelers and Cardinals, and much more. The broadcast begins at 9:00 PM ET, and is brought to you by Georgia Wrestling History’s GWH Radio Network.

World Wrestling Entertainment’s RAW/ECW crew will be in Cleveland, OH, at the Wolstein Center tonight.

WWE results from the Royal Rumble PPV broadcast from the Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, MI, on January 25: Jimmy Wang Yang over Paul Burchill in a dark match; Jack Swagger over Matt Hardy to retain the WWE ECW Title; Melina over Beth Phoenix to win the WWE Women’s Title; John Cena over JBL to retain the WWE World Heavyweight Title – Shawn Michals knocked both men out after the referee was knocked out, put JBL on top of Cena and walked away, but Cena kicked out when a second referee counted, leading to Cena finising off JBL for the win; and Edge over Jeff Hardy to win the WWE Heavyweight Title after Jeff was knocked out by a chair shot from brother Matt – as Edge and Vickie Guerrero celebrated in the ring, Matt walked away, and Jeff was carried from the ring.

JANUARY 26, 1934 (FRIDAY) Notes: Jason Thompson sponsored a publicity stunt in which Bill Lewis would attempt to break the world record of being buried alive. Lewis was to be buried six feet underground outside of Fair Street Arena. Food was to be passed to him through a small shaft. The record for such a stunt was thirty days. We have found no reports as to how long he stayed underground.

JANUARY 26, 1946 (SATURDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) [P] > Women’s Match: Nell Stewart defeated Mattie Bell > Women’s Match: June Byers defeated Juanita Coffman > Georgia Heavyweight Title Match: John Mauldin* defeated Jack Kelly by disqualification > Al Massey & Laverne Baxter defeated Dick Lever & Vic Emanuel > Herb Welch defeated Jack LaRue / Notes: Mattie Bell substituted for Peggy Vaughn in the match with Nell Stewart. Bill Crussell and Bill Collins were credited as being referees for this card. Jack Kelly was disqualified in his match with John Mauldin when he hit Crussell. It was reported that “two young sailors climbed into the ring and grappled for about three or four minutes before being asked to leave the ring” by Collins. Billy Wolfe was in attendance at ringside for this card. The program we have for this card notes that Mauldin had “gained possession of the state championship belt put up by promoter Paul Jones”. It added that Jones had “intended for the belt to be competed for in a tournament, although he is willing to concede that Mauldin would have had an excellent chance to win it”. It also featured an ad for Stan Raymond’s “Sportscope” program airing on WATL AM radio, stating it covers “All the News from the World of Sports”, broadcasting Monday through Saturday at 6:30 PM. There was cooperation between the promotion and Raymond’s show to advertise and discuss the local wrestling scene, as well as feature occasional interviews with wrestlers. Besides noting that Jones is the promoter, the staff credits in the program also mention Bert Prather (Publicity), Bill Hartman (Ticket Sales), Fat Elrod (Announcer), Simon Davis (Timekeeper), and Dr. Samuel Green (Physician). Hartman was a former promoter in Atlanta for the company. It was announced that Ralph Garibaldi would be wrestling on the card on February 1, 1946, and that Young Londos and Bill Longson would be wrestling in Atlanta soon.

JANUARY 26, 1951 (FRIDAY) – ATLANTA, GA – ATLANTA MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Paul Jones – Promoter / Georgia Championship Wrestling) > Red Dugan defeated Honey Boy Hannigan > Tarzan White defeated Nick Carter > Bob Orton defeated Bobby Lane by disqualification > Farmer Jones defeated Jack Steele > Southern Heavyweight Title Match: the Golden Terror defeated Art Nelson* to win title / Notes: Art Nelson had been the reigning Southern Heavyweight Champion since he defeated Finis Hall on December 8, 1950, in Atlanta.
