Arch Rivals:
Controversy over tag team championship brings the New Wave vs. Talent & Money rivalry back to the forefront.

So word has it that SOME high ranking officials in SOME very large wrestling organizations have deemed tag team wrestling dead and buried. Try telling that to an NWA Anarchy fan and you’ll be lucky to walk away without a black eye. After all, for the past 4 years, the fans in the NWA Arena have witnessed some amazing tag team wrestling. The war between Alabama Attitude and The Urban Assault squad set a violent pace for the company upon NWA Anarchy’s inception.   The rivalry between The Awesome Attraction and The Devil’s Rejects set new standards for risk taking and innovation. Then the NWA Elite Team of Phil Shatter & Kimo stormed the scene and totally change the picture.

And just a little under a year ago on August 16th, 2008, out of nowhere, a popular duo of underdogs from the Tarheel state; who embody the essence of tag team wrestling, pulled out the upset of a lifetime. As The New Wave (Derrick Driver & Steven Walters) hit the shores of NWA Anarchy by defeating two of it’s most dangerous and feared opponents, the fans of Georgia and worldwide via the Internet and US syndication jumped on board for the ride of their lives.

For six months and five days, The New Wave, with their innovative double team moves and unique tag team strategies, defeated each and every tag team that stepped up to the plate to challenge them. This included the best NWA Anarchy had to offer, as well as tag team champions from other NWA affiliates as well as top challengers from around the region. They defeated tag teams of all shapes and sizes but what they didn’t expect was a team from their young peer group being the team who climbed the ladder opposite them, and ultimately unseated them for the tag team gold.

Introducing, Talent & Money. Talent & Money started as a team that rose from the ashes of another team. Drew Pendleton III, the sole heir to a rather large family fortune, came to Georgia around 2004 to begin his training as a professional wrestler. Pendleton chose to focus his training on tag team wrestling, as he felt his odds of success were greater in that field. Using his vast resources to grease a few palms, Pendleton began acquiring an fairly impressive social network and his first stab at entering the tag team foray teamed him with a man who shared his taste for affluence, international fashion model "The Obsession" Caleb Konley. Dubbing themselves "Sex & Money", the inexperienced team gained a measure of success in smaller promotions but only had a brief tenure together in NWA Anarchy rings before Konley’s other obligations ended the partnership. JT Talent, who is originally a Georgia native, was also trained at NWA Anarchy and met Pendleton during this process. Talent was pegged by many as one of the future stars of his class and the two had formed a bond based on some of their extra curricular activities. When Konley left Pendleton, Talent was the obvious choice.

For months Talent & Money struggled to get noticed and get victories. They seemed capable of moments of brilliance and idiocy at the same time and one final slight after what many felt was an impressive showing against The New Wave, Talent & Money turned up the intensity by jumping the then tag team champions with the their own title belts and left them lying in a pool of blood. Two weeks later The New Wave, showing that they weren’t the pretty boys some may have thought returned the favor by fighting fire with fire and jumping Talent & Money in the parking lot. That sparked a war that saw T&M use Pendleton’s bankroll to enlist Seth Delay & Brodie Ray Chase in helping them defeat The New Wave for the tag team titles on February 21st, 2009 in a No Disqualification bout.

This lead to the New Wave making the "once and for all" challenge of a Street Fight at Hardcore Hell 2009 for the titles. This delivered in ways nobody thought was possible as one of the most brutal and bloody fights to ever take place in the NWA Arena, even with the help of Brodie & Seth, Talent & Money were unable to stop the inevitable. On April 18th, 2009 in that very bout, Driver & Walters became tag team champions a second time. And since we all know there is no honor among thieves, nobody was surprised to see the Chase/Delay & Talent & Money alliance go up in flames pretty quickly thereafter.

What we saw out of Talent & Money thereafter though seemed to be a change of tune. Oh they were still as pompous and self absorbed as ever, make no mistake. Once the bell rang, however, we saw a whole different team than we’d seen before. We saw a lot less relying on shortcuts and a whole lot more aggression and the former champs ran through every challenger that stepped up as they climbed their way all the way back to the top of the tag team ladder. Talent & Money then made it clear to everyone that they weren’t gonna be taken lightly anymore, and they still didn’t like the New Wave but they respected them and they’d still beat them any way they could, but they didn’t want anyone else’s help to do it.

So, the stage was set for a two out of three falls championship bout, which occurred on August 1st. New Wave took the first fall, Talent & Money took the second and on the third fall both JT Talent & Derrick Driver’s shoulders were pinned to the mat. The outcome was so controversial that a winner couldn’t even be declared that night. NWA Board member Bill Behrens was forced to take video of the bout to the board itself who ruled on August 15th, 2009 that the titles had been vacated and that on August 29th, 2009 at Hostile Environment the titles would be decided by having a ladder match between The New Wave & Talent & Money.

Most fans are very familiar with the rules of the contest, but if you aren’t I’ll explain briefly. The titles are suspended above the ring, and the only rule in the match states that the team that is able to climb the ladder and retrieve the titles will be the winner. NWA Anarchy has quite a history of exciting ladder matches and with the storied rivalry between these two teams; this one could very well be a show stealer.
