Roderick Strong On ROH As An Indy, Being Champion

The following is an excerpt from a new article on Fanhouse.com:

Brian Fritz: So, how’s the life of a wrestler for you right now? Keeping you pretty busy?

Roderick Strong: Yeah definitely. Just doing the gringo like a lot of the other guys on the so called independents do. Every weekend it’s getting out there and trying to get better.

Do you still look at Ring of Honor as an independent?

No I do not. I feel that we are one of the top three companies in the world. And with our television deal (airing Monday nights on HDNet), despite not being a free cable station, we are in over 20 million homes. No, I don’t look at it that way and I don’t think our business approach is that way either.

You’ve been champion now for a few months. Have you felt any extra pressure being the champion and being the guy for Ring of Honor?

I don’t feel a ton of extra pressure. I obviously know from just being around the company what this position holds and the things that are asked of you. I’ve been prepared. Like I always say, you never want to try to get ready while you’re in the position, you want to be ready for the position and I’ve been grooming myself for this position for years and finally, this is my time. Obviously, there is a little more pressure but I’ve been prepared for it. It’s not really affecting me.

How long do you think you’ve been ready for that position?

I would say a couple of years. I don’t know the exact time when I had taken that next step but I feel a couple of years. It’s a tough spot and sometimes you think you’re ready for something like that but in reality you need a little more time to make sure when it happens you handle it in the right way. And I think now is the perfect time.
