Rey Mysterio’s traditional luchador mask seems to have undergone a significant change for WWE’s Saudi Arabian Crown Jewel pay-per-view. While Mysterio often dons a Christian cross on his mask, as a symbolism of his personal faith, Mysterio has not worn any such mask for his two matches in the Crown Jewel World Cup Tournament. Instead the cross has been replaced by the inconspicuous letter R.

WWE appears to have also edited out a cross from Mysterio’s mask in the following promotional photo for Mysterio’s opening round World Cup match against Randy Orton:

Mysterio’s cross may have been removed to placate the same Saudi government that reportedly kept Sami Zayn off The Greatest Royal Rumble because he is of Syrian descent.

Mysterio defeated Randy Orton to advance to the semi-finals of the World Cup tournament, where he then lost to The Miz. Stay with WrestleZone for complete Crown Jewel coverage.
