Actor and WWE Superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is receiving criticism for his new role as John Henry in Netflix’s upcoming John Henry and the Statesman.

Some have taken to social media to object to The Rock, who also serves as a producer for the film, being ‘too light skinned’ to play the iconic folk lore character.

Ira Madison, who writes for Daybreak on Netflix, shared the following:

The Rock’s new Big Trouble In Little China film is also under attack, this time from the director of the original film.

Director John Carpenter had the following to say during a CinemaBlend round table:

“They want a movie with Dwayne Johnson. That’s what they want. So they just picked a title. They don’t give a sh*t about me and my movie. That movie wasn’t a success.”

The Rock’s Big Trouble in Little China is set for a November 2019 release. John Henry and the Statesman is scheduled for a release sometime in 2020.
