Exclusive: The One Time DX Might Have Chickened Out

dxAs you’ve heard me say many times before, I pride myself on not trying to repeat something in wrestling that we’ve seen played out a hundred times before. I would literally torture myself by never putting my mind to rest in coming up with something – ANYTHING – that was different. And, after much deliberation, I thought I had it.

After being embarrassed by DX due to their public belittling of them, The Nation was going to challenge DX to a flag football game. Yes…a REAL flag football game.

The plan was to go out on a football field and have the two factions square off. . . as a shoot. Now, keep in mind, while we are all familiar with DX, let’s take a look at who was on the other side: “The Strongest Man in the World” in Mark Henry, “The Toughest Man in the World” in the Godfather, a legitimate defensive lineman from the University of Miami in The Rock, and D-Lo Brown. (No offense, D-Lo, but the others were monsters.)

Now, taking a look at the DX lineup, you get the feeling that these were the guys in high school that weren’t necessarily going out for the varsity football team.

X-Pac and Road Dog? They may not have even known they were in high school at the time.

Triple H? Can you see Triple H running routes and catching the game-winning touchdown?

However, I will say this – after seeing him in action, here and there, over the years, Billy Gunn (Kip) could have been the best athlete on the field. Even better then The Rock. Many people don’t realize that Kip was a professional bull rider at one time. Where Rock was referring to himself as “The Brahma Bull”, Kip was actually riding on the back of one, night in and night out! Kip just looks like that 4-sport high school jock who takes your girlfriend, then gives her back when he’s finished. So with Kip heading the DX team, one would think that they at least had a chance.

Unfortunately, the game never happened.

The idea was pooh-poohed by DX. I think they were legitimately concerned about how The Nation may have made them look in the process. Now think about the irony of this for a second – Hunter, Sean, Billy, Brian and Chyna were willing to drive up to WCW’s back door driving a freakin’ rocket launcher where they legitimately could have been arrested and taken to jail, but play a FLAG FOOTBALL game against the Nation of Domination? “No thank you.”

Again, only in wrestling!
