Mt. Killamanjaro: TNA Hits & Misses – Part 1

Matt Morgan – Miss

This is one of the most consistently frustrating topics for me, as I absolutely hate when wrestling companies leave potential and raw talent on the table. Matt Morgan is a 7-foot giant with an amazing build, who has come a long way on the mic since his WWE Smackdown debut in 2003. But for a guy who has been with TNA since 2007, his Wiki page should have a hell of a lot more content on it. I really don’t understand why such a talented athlete is kept on contract for so long, and given so very little to work with.

In 2012, Morgan made some buzz around the internet by attacking seemingly random individuals at house shows. There was a lot of talk about a potential Aces & Eights tie-in, but that seems to have fallen through for the sake of getting over the younger Joey Ryan. Now it’s months later, and neither are used to any great extent. They shouldn’t have been paired in the first place; what does The Blueprint stand to gain from that alliance? Nothing, and that’s why the story faded away, and was never mentioned again.

I was really interested in Morgan’s underlying feud with Hulk Hogan, but you just can’t mention something every two months and hope it gets over with the fans. There was some promise there, but I think a lot of the references (Hogan’s Shae Stadium cape) kind of went over a lot of people’s heads. Or again, it just wasn’t given enough consistency for them to catch on. For a minute, the big man was #1 contender and in the World title picture; good thing they got Sting over…again!

Morgan is a great talent, and it pains me to include him in the “miss” category, but TNA needs to decide on a direction for him, and stick with it every single week. Go back to him calling out Hogan’s mistakes. There’s something good there. I’m holding onto hope that the powers-that-be buried him under Sting for a reason; I’ll be keeping an eye on the main event this Sunday.
