The Best Match I Ever Saw

The RockWhat’s the best match you’ve ever seen? Both live in person and on either TV, tape or DVD?

For me, the best match I ever saw live was Rock vs Stone Cold at WrestleMania in Houston. It had everything, starting with the buildup and that memorable video with the Limp Bizkit song. Neither guy jumped off the top rope and the crowd was into it from start to finish. I watched it from the floor of the Astrodome and was proud of the company I then worked for.

The next year, I watched Rock vs Hogan at WrestleMania in Toronto from the same vantage point. In with the fans to get their experience. It had tons of emotion and while not the best match I ever saw live, it was up near the top.

The best match I ever saw on TV was Ric Flair vs Terry Funk, I Quit on November 15, 1989. I was the biggest WCW fan going back to the Crockett days just four years earlier and this match to me was better than anything else I had ever seen on TV. Not only that but to me, it holds up over time. I’ve gone back and re-watched the match several times and I still think it’s the best.

The best match I ever saw on tape was William Regal vs Chris Benoit from the Brian Pillman Memorial Event on May 25, 2000. This match is a classic and should be shown to every young wrestler and their trainers should put this match on and simply say “do this”. Four hours into an event in a hot building and fans had seen everything. Regal had been down and out but was coming back after getting cleaned up. Fans chanted “boring” at the beginning but were on their feet for the finish.

Second best match I ever saw on tape was from New England Championship Wrestling… Bruce Wee vs Tiny the Terrible. Yes, a midget match. Cried laughing while watching it. I gave it 10 stars, maybe 11. I need a copy of this match so if anyone has it, please let me know. This match had it all. On a side note, I booked Tiny to play midget D-Von Dudley on Raw in North Carolina. I had a great job in the WWE.

There have been tons of great matches that I had the pleasure of calling for Ring of Honor. Davey Richards vs “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin from “Showdown in the Sun” is a 2012 Match of Year Candidate and is worth the price of the event. This match was aided by the fans that were going crazy in the War Memorial Auditorium in Ft. Lauderdale. A great crowd makes a great match even better.
