#1. TRIPLE H/BROCK LESNAR
I may get heat for this (it sure seems like I say that a lot), but I didn’t enjoy Triple H’s promo at No Way Out last night. At all. Even more, I rarely seem to enjoy Hunter’s promos these days.
And FURTHERMORE, I’m not that excited about a Triple H/Brock Lesnar program either.
Those are two separate points, and there’s separate reasons I feel the way I do about each of them. Let’s start with the mic work…
Triple H is a very good “talker”. He rarely stumbles over his words, he’s typically direct and to the point, and he knows what messages need to be delivered to put over the feud/match he’s selling. Those are very good qualities to have as a promo guy. However, he’s so good at those things, it seems to make him very cliche and “by the book.”
His promos often lack emotion as a result.
Hunter has this low, growling thing that he does now. He’s had it for a long time to an extent, but now it seems he relies on it. It now seems forceful, like he’s trying too hard. Reminds me of Ken Anderson — a guy that has all the natural ability in the world on the stick, but now does this slow, whispering thing during his promos. I think THEY think it adds great inflection; I think it hurts the overall delivery.
On to my issues with Brock vs Triple H…
If this was the first match for a returning Brock, it would have been fine. Let Brock go over, get a decisive win under his belt, and get some momentum before heading into a bigger headlining match. Also, if this match would have taken place immediately after Brock’s loss to Cena, which would have been last night at No Way Out, it would have been fine. That would have allowed Brock to get some quick heat back after his loss.
Instead of those two scenarios, they are stretching this all the way to SummerSlam.
What does a win in this match do for Hunter? Nothing, he’s not a full-time worker anymore. What does it do for Brock? Nothing, he’s not a full-time worker anymore.
Apparently, Brock’s contract called for a VERY limited amount of dates. If they are that limited, why waste them on someone like Hunter? If it’s meant to be JUST a big time, one-off match, there are still better options (Rock, Austin, Taker, Cena again).
Otherwise, isn’t CM Punk better served with a win over Brock? Sheamus, even? Those are still big time matches, PLUS they put someone over that actually needs it.
I guess it’s hard to get excited about a match that has no meaning or relevance or serves any real purpose for either man involved.
On the flip side of things, I certainly see now why Cena won at Extreme Rules. If Brock’s lack of contractual dates limit him to the point that he’s nothing more than a glorified “put over” man — which I’m all for, by the way — then Cena winning was absolutely the right move. The only way it wouldn’t have been the right move was if Brock was going to continue working Cena.
