What’s Bothering Me? (In Professional Wrestling)

#3. WWE's Plans To Push Twitter More

Vince McMahon has found a new toy to play with and it comes in the form of Twitter!

You know what probably did it?  The trending of "Anal Bleeding." I'm sure Vince is just foaming at the mouth trying to top that one. Who can blame him, honestly? That is pretty awesome.

Vince McMahonI guess I'm going to have to wait and see how much "more aggressive" they push the social media phenomenon before completely tearing the idea to shreds. I'm all for taking advantage of the marketing tools available online, but it could become "too much" very quickly.

Look at how exhausting it becomes when they have a new WWE Films movie to promote – constant reminders, constantly. By the time you even think about watching them, what's the point anymore. You start to feel like you've already seen it.  I think the same could happen with Twitter.

What they are doing now should suffice. Putting a wrestler's Twitter name at the bottom of the graphic during their entrances, showing WWE-related trends during the broadcast, and hyping WWE's official account are all fine. They are simple, subtle solutions. Asking fans to respond to a couple of questions during a broadcast is well and good. I don't see how much more aggressive you can be than that. Or need to be, for that matter.

I'm just worried that Twitter will become just another unnecessary distraction, keeping WWE from focusing on what should be the most important thing right now: the quality of their product.
