Nick’s Pay-Per-Review: WWE Tables, Ladders & Chairs 2009

ECW Championship Ladder Match: Christian (c) vs Shelton Benjamin: Before I get into this match, I want to say that it was frustrating for me to hear the fans chanting that they "wanted blood" when the trainer was attempting to clean up Christian early on in the match. One thing we don’t consider about WWE’s new PG rating is the effect that it will have on the overall health of the wrestlers. With the recent news of concussions becoming an ongoing issue in wrestling, it’s actually a rewarding thing to see WWE focus more on the health of its talent as opposed to our fixation for brutal violence. Wrestling matches can still be entertaining and innovative without all the gore, so I advise people to take health into consideration the next time they bash the PG product. If nothing else, being more careful in the ring will add longevity to the wrestlers’ careers, so they’ll be able to entertain you longer.

Onto the match last night, I thought it was a fantastic way to open the show. It set the unique tone of the night, and gave the fans the chance to see two guys who are very skilled in the ladder match department put on a great show. Yes, the bout was not as "daring" as some have been in the past, but it was well wrestled and told an exciting story so what more should you want? I had a strong feeling, as I’m sure most did, that Benjamin would not pick up the win last night, as he seems to be more of a placeholder contender than anything else, but that didn’t take away from the excitement of this opening bout. Out of a possible 9 stars, I give this match 8 stars.
