EXCLUSIVE: The Enduring Lesson of Old School

Not everything was perfect back when “Old School” was today. Deaths and catastrophic injuries like to Magnum TA happened.  I know fans in Dallas cared less and less about each subsequent Von Erich as the Death Pool continued to pay out, but Mike, Chris and finally Lance would have never been in those positions if those that died  weren’t such sorry tales.

But Jim Ross didn’t die… he recovered unlike Magnum TA and last night, he proved what I said leading to this past WrestleMania… Cole should just hand the headset to JR and walk to the back. Making matters worse for Cole, he was told to bitch and whine like an 8-year old forced to share his Buzz Lightyear. And it’s Vince here, folks, who keeps Ross off TV. McMahon’s disgust toward JR was a big reason why Mick Foley quit. What happens going forward?

Why do fans like Jim Ross, Howard Finkel and the other legends? Because wrestling fans like wrestling on TV because it’s comfort food. Yes, I’ve written about it before but it bears repeating, over and over again until something changes with the creative direction of wrestling. Why would the WWE have the best play-by-play announcer and the best ring announcer ever and not use either one?

But one thing WWE has going for itself… TNA is still around to make it look like Mid-South in 1984.
