Mehcad Brooks Is Jimmy Olsen In ‘Supergirl’

Earlier this month, CBS wrapped up its extensive search for the star of “Supergirl” by casting “Glee” actress Melissa Benoist in the title role. And now, the second most well known character on “Supergirl” has been cast.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mehcad Brooks has been signed to play Jimmy Olsen on “Supergirl.” Jimmy Olsen has been a member of Superman’s supporting cast since 1938, usually as a photographer for The Daily Planet. Olsen has also headlined his comic book series: Superman’s Pal, Jimmy Olsen.

The creative team of “Supergirl” hinted last fall that they were looking at actors of ethnicities to play Olsen in their show. But the casting notice described Olsen as “a smart, worldly and… attractive photographer for CatCo. Though an alpha male, his salt-of-the-earth nature elicits a huge ol’ crush from Kara.”

“Alpha male?!” Jimmy Olsen can be many things, but never an alpha male. Otherwise he wouldn’t Superman to save him every Wednesday.

As for Brooks, he has a long history on TV, including his starring stint on “Necessary Roughness,” his supporting roles on “True Blood,” “The Game” and “Desperate Housewives.”

If the previously leaked “Supergirl” casting call is still accurate, some of the other roles to be filled include Supergirl’s older foster sister, and other characters from the Superman and Supergirl comics including Cat Grant, Winslow Schott and Hank Henshaw.

“Supergirl” is expected to premiere this fall on CBS.
